Tips for Using a Ductless Mini-Split System

Ductless mini-split heat pumps have many benefits. They are efficient, allow for zoned temperature control in your home, and are quiet. Once properly sized and placed, a mini-split should serve your needs for many years. But to get the most out of it, it’s important to know how to use and operate the system. Here are some useful tips:

Let Your Mini-Split Run

While a central HVAC unit cycles on and off about every 15 minutes, running a ductless heat pump 24/7 can reduce energy consumption and maintain consistent temperatures. You also don’t need as much of a temperature setback at night. Overall, smaller setbacks mean the system won’t have to work as hard. However, turning your heat pump off when away for a few days or longer is a good idea.

Program Temperature Cycles on the App

If your mini-split comes with an app, you can program it on your smartphone based on your schedule. For example, you can adjust the temperature when you go to work and change the settings remotely so your home is comfortable when you return. The unit can be controlled as it would be with a programmable or smart thermostat.

Don’t Dwell on Numbers

A ductless indoor air handler is usually 7 or 8 feet above the floor. Therefore, the temperature setting on the remote may be different from what you are feeling. Experiment, see what setting you are most comfortable with, and note what setting works best. It may a few degrees higher or lower than you’d expect.

Set the Fan to “Auto”

The fan in a mini-split can change speeds based on the temperature setting and weather. Setting it to “Auto” mode allows it to adjust accordingly. The system can therefore work at maximum efficiency and you won’t have to keep adjusting the fan speed manually.

Direct Airflow to Account for Comfort

Adjusting the vents on air handlers can help achieve greater comfort year-round. The reason is warm air rises and cooler air sinks. Therefore, in the summer it helps to direct airflow upwards and in winter to direct it toward the floor. This helps achieve comfort throughout the room.

Open Interior Doors

Leaving doors between rooms open allows air to circulate and can reduce the temperature by as much as 5℉. You can raise the temperature setting and get the same level of comfort. This can improve efficiency and reduce strain, so the unit may need fewer repairs and last longer.

Close Shades, Blinds, and Curtains

The warmth of the sun is a challenge for any cooling system in summer. Covering the windows during the day will make it easier for your heat pump to keep your home cool. The opposite is true in winter when opening shades helps. You can get heat from the sun’s rays without turning the mini-split up much.

Maintain the Filters

Cleaning and changing air filters is important for any HVAC system. The filtration system in a ductless unit is easy to clean. Just remove the filter and wipe it with a cloth. Or, change the filter every couple of months or as recommended by the manufacturer. Clean filters improve airflow, reduce strain, and keep dust, debris, or dander out of the air and vital components.

Pair Your Mini-Split with an Existing HVAC System

Using a mini-split as a supplementary heat source is an option. If you have central air, it may not heat or cool rooms off the path of ductwork, such as a basement, garage, or attic. Extending ductwork can be complicated and expensive. But installing a mini-split in a room you need heating or cooling is an effective way to achieve comfort.

Ensure It Is Draining

The drainage system is an important part of your ductless heat pump. Condensation forms naturally on the evaporator coils during the cooling process. It should drain outside. If condensate is not visible as the unit is running, the system is not draining properly. This can cause it to work less efficiently or the coils to freeze. Call a qualified professional to inspect the unit and, if necessary, make repairs.
