Ductless Mini Split Maintenance Tips

A ductless mini split air conditioner is one of the most efficient HVAC options available. But to ensure it remains so, it must be properly maintained. Otherwise, the unit may not function properly or last as long. Here are some ductless mini-split maintenance tips to ensure your heating and cooling system provides lasting comfort.

Clean the AC Regularly

Dust and dirt can accumulate on the units and eventually find their way inside, wreaking havoc on internal components. First, turn the system off (to avoid damage and/or electrocution). Then use a damp cloth or gentle chemical cleaner on the outside of each unit. The exterior of AC units should be cleaned at least once a week. Clean exterior vents as well to avoid clogging.

Give the AC Room to Breathe

A ductless AC is more compact than other units. However, it will function best if there are at least four feet of space in each direction. Regularly check that furniture, shelves, or art are not encroaching on the unit, and move any items away if they’re too close. Limited space can restrict airflow and cause dust to accumulate.

Clean the Filters

Neglecting to clean AC filters can significantly reduce efficiency. The system will have to work harder as well. Fortunately, ductless mini-split filters are easy to clean or replace. The user manual should explain how to proceed. If the filter is cleanable, check it every four to six weeks and use a clean, dry cloth to wipe away accumulated material. Filters that cannot be cleaned or are damaged should be replaced.

Clean Up the Outdoor Condenser

The system cannot function without the outdoor unit, which is vulnerable to dirt and debris buildup. After powering the system off, spray the unit clean with a garden hose and wipe debris away by hand. In the process, check the coil fins and use an alignment comb to restore any bent fins to their proper shape (also spray the unit carefully to avoid bending the fins).

Check/Clean the AC Pipes

Pipes move refrigerant to transport cold or heat between the outside and inside units. Dust and dirt can inhibit this process. Clean off pipes if possible but call a professional if you’re concerned about causing damage. Look for holes, cracks, and leaks as well. Having them fixed promptly can avoid dealing with more serious issues.

Look for Ice and Snow During the Heating Season

Any gaps in heating during winter can be extremely uncomfortable. Therefore, check for ice frequently and gently remove any ice you find to avoid expensive repairs. When it snows, wipe away accumulated snow before it freezes. Despite its exposure to the elements, you can protect the outdoor unit to ensure it runs efficiently.

Schedule Professional Maintenance Annually

The small maintenance tasks you do yourself can make a big difference in terms of efficiency, performance, and longevity. It’s also wise to have a trained technician check your ductless mini-split once a year. They can check for blockages, leaks, and other issues as well as test mechanical and electrical components. If needed, minor repairs can be completed on the spot. Calibrations and adjustments can be performed to optimize performance and efficiency.
